I remember coming across the above poster for the 1973 Nazisploitation Frauleins in Uniform (aka She Devils of the SS or the far more accurate Frauline Without a Uniform) when looking for fun exploitation posters online. The painted image of a smokin’ hot German babe brandishing an automatic weapon, wearing only a hat and unbuttoned shirt, with that eagle covering the naughty stuff up top struck me as quite beautiful in a twisted, exploitative way.
There have been plenty of Nazisploitation films over the years (Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS being considered the quintessential film in the subgenre), and most tend to utilize Nazi uniforms and insignia for their fetishistic qualities. However, most of them have been far more focused on exploring depraved violence than Frauleins in Uniform, which is essentially a soft-core porn flick. There isn’t much of a plot, and if you try to follow what little there is, you’ll likely find yourself pretty lost by the film’s end. Basically all the women in the film join the army hoping to do their part for Germany, whether that means fighting on the front lines, or boosting the troops’ moral (by spreading their legs).
Frauleins in Uniform does not skimp on the nudity. Female nudity, that is. I don’t think one man is ever pictured naked. Many a scene had me wondering how these guys could be having such a good time with their uniforms still on. Fortunetly, most of the girls aren't afraid to engage in some friendly lesbian action either, and those are the few moments where both parties are naked. The sex is very tame, almost to the point of being charming, which is a strange thing to say about a Nazisploitation film. You can tell the Nazi aspect is pretty much just here to take advantage of the uniforms, since what little we see of the war boils down to a few sparse and well-produced (if somewhat dull) action scenes. There is an abundance of female flesh on screen, and all the actresses are more than adequate for their roles. This is one nudie flick where (even though there may be more hair than we’re used to today) everyone getting naked is actually someone you want to see naked.
I stumbled across a DVD of this film at a local used record store and decided to nab it after recognizing the cover art. A company called Cheezy Flicks puts out the disc and for $7 you can order it directly from them. I’m not sure what the shipping & handling comes to, but I paid $8 for my copy and I’m pretty content with that. The picture quality isn’t anything spectacular, but it is anamorphic widescreen and the colors are pretty clean and clear. The only audio provided is a dubbed English track, which adds to the cheese factor in a good way. The disc also includes some fun concession stand ads for old drive-ins, as well as trailers for a handful of other titles Cheezy Flicks has put out.
It’s strange to see a Nazisploitation flick this tame, but for what it is Frauleins in Uniform is pretty fun. Fans of the subgenre will want to check it out, at least for the great bodies in fetishized outfits.
